Sharon Percy Rockefeller, who runs a public television station in Washington, D.C. and who is the wife of Sen. John D. “Jay” Rockefeller, has paid $2,175,000 for an apartment in mid-town Manhattan that overlooks the Museum of Modern Art.

The New York Observer’s Max Abelson this morning has a fascinating piece on Mrs. Rockefeller’s recent purchase. Public records show that Sharon Percy Rockefeller purchased the 2,500-square-foot unit on May 29, and that the sale was recorded on Jun. 19.

Mrs. Rockefeller’s 14th-floor unit is in the 53-story, Cesar Pelli-designed Museum Tower building at 15 W. 53rd Street in mid-town Manhattan, according to public records. The 1,427-square-foot unit, in the northeast corner of the building, has one bedroom and two baths, the Observer reported. Mrs. Rockefeller is a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art, and her new unit overlooks the museum’s sculpture garden.

The Rockefeller family owns several thousand acres in West Virginia, which is the state that Jay Rockefeller represents in the U.S. Senate, and they also since the mid-1980s have owned a massive, 39-room, 16,658-square-foot spread on 15.88 acres at 1940 Shepherd Street in northwest Washington, D.C., according to public records.
