After several years of being unable to sell it, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons has rented out his 7,000-square-foot triplex apartment at 114 Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan, according to the New York Post. Simmons, 49, first listed the 13-room penthouse in May 2005 for $11 million, and subsequently reduced its asking price to $10 million, then to $8.2 million, then to $7.2 million, and finally to below $6 million. Back in 2001, Simmons was all set to sell the four-bedroom, 4 1/2-bath unit to Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. However, the sale was due to close on September 11, 2001, and Simmons cancelled the deal and allowed Combs to walk away from it. Now, the Post is reporting that Simmons is leasing the unit to a couple from Westchester County and their children. Features in the penthouse include a media room, a meditation room (or den) with a fireplace, a game room, a dining room, a breakfast room, a large gourmet kitchen, elevators opening into the apartment, a curving grand staircase, and more than 2,000 square feet of terrace space. The Post reported that Simmons has been rumored to be negotiating to buy a place in the West Village for close to $8 million. He also has been in the process of trying to sell his 10-bedroom, 35,000-square-foot mansion on 4 acres at 101 Fox Hedge Road in Saddle River, N.J. for $20 million. He had bought that house in 2001 for $13.5 million. In addition, Simmons and his estranged wife, Kimora Lee, in 2005 paid $5.25 million to buy a gated five-bedroom, 5,818-square-foot Mediterranean-style house at 1501 N. Doheny Drive just off Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip.
