Rocker Michael Stipe, who is the face and voice of the rock band R.E.M., has paid $5.75 million to buy actor Casey Affleck's co-op apartment at 533 Canal Street in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood, according to public records. The New York Post's fine celebrity real estate columnist Braden Keil broke the story and provided details on Stipe's new penthouse loft, which were helpful, since no listing sheet was readily available online. The three-bedroom co-op has three and a half baths, views of the Hudson River and the city, high ceilings and exposed brick, the Post reported. Other features in the penthouse loft include a dramatic living room with a fireplace, a large master bedroom suite, a den/library, and an open gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances, the paper reported. Stipe's new building is a haven for artists of all kinds. Film director Jesse Peretz (a onetime rocker himself, having led the band the Lemonheads) lives there, and director Gus Van Sant has owned in the building as well. Stipe continues to own plenty of property in his native Athens, Ga., including his main house at 180 and 186 Grady Avenue. Other properties he owns in Athens include houses at 224 Hill Street, and 195 Prince Avenue, a commercial building at 523 Prince Avenue, and a restaurant at 197 Prince Avenue, according to public records. He also has been reported to have a home in Los Angeles.
