With the Academy Awards airing tonight, Oscar-nominated actress Helen Mirren and her husband, Oscar-nominated director Taylor Hackford, are offering their 6.61-acre estate in Hollywood, Calif. up for lease for $40,000 a month.

Mirren, 61, and Hackford, 62, have owned the estate at 2003 La Brea Terrace since 1986, according to public records and news accounts, and not 1996, as has been reported elsewhere. Late last year, they transferred the property’s ownership to their Las Jacarandas LP company—clearly named after the property, given that an October 2006 New Yorker article noted that their estate has various trees including “Mexican palms, Italian cypresses, birds-of-paradise, jacaranda, oleander, carob, coral, eucalyptus, and Chinese lantern trees.”

The estate has Hollywood pedigree as well, having once belonged to silent-film actor Dustin Farnum, who was Cecil B. DeMille’s first great movie star. Features on the property, which has satisfied what Mirren told the New Yorker was her “appetite for solitude,” include a 6,699-square-foot, Mediterranean-style main house that was built in 1911 (somehow, the listing agent translated the house’s 6,699 square feet into being “almost 7000” square feet) and has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms. The estate, which technically has two addresses—2001 La Brea and 2003 La Brea—also has a 2,740-square-foot guest cottage, a pool, and terraces, according to listing information. Check out the property’s listing sheet.

Last October, the New Yorker brilliantly described Mirren’s L.A. digs with the following opening paragraph: “If you go east on Sunset Boulevard and take a left onto one of those burned-out stretches of arterial road which cut across the main drag like stitches on a baseball, you pass Laundromats, motels, gas stations, pawnshops, and burger stands, until the road abruptly dead-ends at the base of the foothills beside Runyon Canyon. Towering bamboo plants block any glimpse of what lies up above. To the side are the gates of a private road, a terrace hidden behind palm fronds and hibiscus. This vertiginous landscape is one of the places that the actress Helen Mirren calls home. To enter her driveway is like going from black-and-white to Technicolor.”

So where are Mirren and Hackford going? It’s very unclear. The couple also owns what Santa Barbara County public records call an “income property” at 316 W. Arrellaga St. in Hackford’s native Santa Barbara, Calif. And what hasn’t been reported in the flurry of recent news coverage over the pair deciding to rent out their Hollywood house is that they also have homes in London, Provence, France, and New York. In fact, her London house was described by the New Yorker as being a “former customs house, near Tower Bridge, on the cobbled backstreets of East London,” with her front door looking out over a communal garden that is the only garden on the Thames. The couple also, at one time, had owned a house in New Orleans’ French quarter. We’ll keep you posted on their next move, as information becomes available.
