Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have paid about $35 million for a Beverly Hills mansion that was not on the market, according to today's "Hot Property" column in the Los Angeles Times.

Cruise has rented the 6,685-square-foot mansion at 918 N. Alpine Drive in Beverly Hills since 2001. However, his lease is up in 2008, the Times reported. We couldn't yet find evidence of his reported new purchase having cleared public records--at least in the databases that we have access to--but if the details that the Times reported are correct, the property appears to be the 10,286-square-foot mansion at 1111 Calle Vista Drive, which is just a few blocks northwest of Cruise and Holmes' current rental digs.

Compare the descriptions of the two properties with us: the Times noted that Cruise's new house was built in 1937 and has a long driveway, seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and a pool. Public records show that the Calle Vista property has the exact same characteristics. The Times also noted that the property had changed hands in 2003, which the Calle Vista property did. The Times reported that Cruise's new property is on a 1.3-acre parcel, while public records show that 1111 Calle Vista is on a 1.206-acre tract. Finally, the owner of 1111 Calle Vista is mega-agent to the stars Kurt Rappaport, who would obviously be a logical person to discuss a property that was not on the market with Cruise's agent.

We'll keep you posted when we get more information. In the meantime, we're also monitoring closely the chatter online over at the Real Estalker about Cruise and/or the Church of Scientology having purchased a compound at 7860 Torreyson Drive up in the Hollywood Hills, for $9.85 milion in 2005 through something called Dakota Enterprises LLC. When we have more time (probably later today), we'll provide our take on that development as well. Stay tuned.
