Bassist Tony Kanal of the band No Doubt has listed one of the two houses he owns in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Los Feliz for $1,495,000.
Kanal, 36, traded up in his housing in late 2005 by paying around $2.8 million for actor Heath Ledger's 4,905-square-foot house, also in Los Feliz. Now that Kanal has completed renovating that house, the Los Angeles Times will report tomorrow that Kanal is trying to sell his longtime house, at 1911 N. Hobart Boulevard in Los Feliz.
Built in 1922, the house that Kanal is selling is a two-story, Mediterranean-style home behind gates, according to listing information. Kanal purchased the house in 1998 for $565,000 through his Satyagraha Trust, according to public records. Features in the six-bedroom, 3,228-square-foot house include four period-style master baths, a stainless chef's kitchen with a separate pantry, generous public rooms, palladium windows and doors, and additional room for home offices, an au pair suite, guest rooms or a media room, according to listing information. The house also has generous extra storage, a two-car garage and a large open parking area, according to listing information.
The house that Kanal is selling already may be under contract, given that it no longer appears in the multiple listing service and also given that the website that its listing agent created for the house, www.1911hobart.com, no longer seemed to be working as of Saturday afternoon.
The former Heath Ledger house that Kanal now owns is at 4834 Bonvue Avenue in Los Feliz and was built in 1925, according to public records. The five-bedroom house, Spanish-style house was designed by the architect Stiles O. Clements, according to a 2005 Los Angeles Times article. Features in Kanal's new house include a media room, gardens, a detached guesthouse, and a period courtyard with an outside fireplace, foutain and vintage tile, according to that article. Ledger sold that house because he had decided at that time to relocate to a house at 126 Hoyt Street in Brooklyn, N.Y., which he purchased in September 2005 for $3,600,000 through his Thank You For the Trust Trust, according to public records. However, since that time, Ledger decided to buy another house in L.A., paying $2,300,000 through his Thank You For the Trust Trust in June 2006 to buy the 1,861-square-foot, post-and-beam house at 8010 Woodrow Wilson Drive in the Hollywood Hills that comedian Ellen DeGeneres had owned from 2004 until selling it in 2005 for $2,100,000, according to public records. That Woodrow Wilson Drive house is located in a sycamore grove and is known as "The Treehouse," according to a 2006 Los Angeles Times article about Ledger's purchase.
