Rocker Eddie Van Halen and his drummer brother, Alex Van Halen, sell 2,917-square-foot house in the gated Summit neighborhood above Beverly Hills, CA for an undisclosed price (likely in the $2M-$2.5M range) after it had been listed for $2.2M; the pair had owned the house as a residence for their late mother
Rocker Eddie Van Halen and his drummer brother, Alex Van Halen, have quietly sold a 2,917-square-foot house in the gated Summit neighborhood above Beverly Hills, Calif. for an undisclosed price, likely between $2 million and $3 million, after it had been on the market for $2,200,000. The house had been the residence of their mother, Eugenia Van Halen, who died in 2005 at age 89.
In a Big Time Listings exclusive, we can report on the sale of the house at 12024 Summit Circle by the brothers Van Halen, which closed on January 25 and which was recorded on February 26. The deed lists both Alex and Eddie Van Halen as sellers of the house, which had been purchased many years ago by them as a house for their mother to occupy. The outdated (and often-inaccurate) celebrity address lists that litter the Internet incorrectly identify the address as being the residence of Alex Van Halen, who did indeed once own the house nearby at 12047 Summit Circle, until selling it in 1995 for $1,325,000. However, as we wrote on March 11 in our post about Alex Van Halen’s ex-wife Kelly listing her house in Los Angeles’ Encino area, Alex Van Halen owns and occupies a 6,709-square-foot house in Hidden Hills, Calif. that he has owned since buying it in 1997 for exactly $2,000,000. Built in 1987, the house at 12024 Summit was purchased new in 1987 for an undisclosed price by Eddie and Alex Van Halen. The three-bedroom house has four baths and sits on a 0.43-acre parcel, according to public records. Eddie Van Halen’s divorce with his actress wife Valerie Bertinelli was finalized on December 20, 2007, and not surprisingly, records show that Bertinelli had quit-claimed her half-ownership of the house at 12024 Summit to Eddie shortly before the sale. Eddie Van Halen and Bertinelli have owned no shortage of Los Angeles-area real estate over the years. It’s taking some time for us to ascertain which property went to which individual in the divorce settlement. However, here’s what we know now: –Eddie Van Halen and Bertinelli, who had separated in 2001, paid $1,925,000 the following year, in May 2002, through their Carvin Trust to purchase a 4,654-square-foot house at 3496 Berry Drive in Los Angeles’ Studio City area, according to public records. Their Carvin Trust continues to own that house. –Eddie Van Halen and Bertinelli long have owned a 9,578-square-foot house on 2.39 acres (across two lots) at 3371 Coldwater Canyon Avenue (the vacant lot has the address of 3361 Coldwater Canyon Avenue) in Los Angeles’ Studio City area. That house was built in 1989. Fans of Van Halen’s music surely will know that that property has been the home of Eddie’s home studio 5150 Studios, where the band has recorded many an album. –Finally, the couple long has owned a 4,676-square-foot house on almost exactly 1 acre at 31736 Broad Beach Road in Malibu, which they owned through their Carvin Trust. (As an aside, bandmate Sammy Hagar once owned the house next door, at 31740 Broad Beach Road.) In commenting on our March 11 post, our loyal commenter tlp333 had suggested that we do a “Where in the world is…?” installment profiling the residences of the rest of the various current and former members of Van Halen. Today’s post partially accomplishes that, although we have every intention of completing it soon, tlp333 (we promise!). In the meantime, though, we just recently had separately (and coincidentally) run across the sale of the Van Halen brothers’ maternal house at 12024 Summit, and we were dying to bring the news of that sale to our readers. As regular readers of Big Time Listings are aware, the Summit neighborhood has housed many a celebrity over the years. Obviously, the granddaddy (grandmommy?) of them all, recognition-wise, would have to be Britney Spears, whose Love Shack Trust purchased the 7,453-square-foot house nearby at 12094 Summit Circle on December 14, 2006 for $6,750,000. Among the many other past and present celebs in the Summit: –Singer Gwen Stefani, who paid $13,250,000 in August 2006 through her Von Trapp Trust to purchase her 9,001-square-foot mansion at 11951 Crest Place (which Jennifer Lopez at one time had owned through her Crest Place Trust) –Actress Holly Robinson Peete and her former football-playing husband, whose listing of their 7,234-square-foot house at 11964 Crest Place we wrote about on March 2, 2007 –Retired talk-show sidekick Ed McMahon, who has been trying forever to sell his formerly mold-infested, 7,013-square-foot mansion at 12000 Crest Court, which is right across the street from the Peetes’ place and which we wrote about on March 25, 2007 –Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, who owned the 7,858-square-foot house at 12095 Summit Circle from 1998 until selling it in 2001 for $2,313,000 –Singer Paul Anka, who in 2004 sold his longtime, 7,688-square-foot mansion at 12078 Summit Circle for its $5.9 million asking price to producer and philanthropist Kate Edelman Johnson, according to public records. As we noted a few weeks ago, we’re suckers for the Van Halen song “Cradle Will Rock.” In the same vein, we also love the video for the tune “Hot for Teacher,” which you can view here.

SongWrite You know a great song when you hear one, so why can it seem so hard to write one? How is it that some songwriters can crank out classic hit after hit, while others struggle to write one single decent song?
What’s wrong with having a big house if you can afford it? Just because you live by yourself or with one other person instead of six doesn’t mean you should be in a smaller place; that doesn’t make any sense. People, by nature, need space.
If Dido comes with it I will take it!

Actually it wasn’t just two people. Nikki had three kids from a previous marriage who visited often and she had her son who lived with her, plus their had a child together. So they needed more than enough room.
Plus “they” had a child together. Forgive my spelling error
