Own Jerry Seinfeld’s former L.A. home; comedian’s onetime house in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills just hit the market with a $7.9M asking price

In a Big Time Listings exclusive, we can report on the listing of the house, which is at 9444 Sierra Mar Place in the Hollywood Hills. The house came on the market on Monday.

Seinfeld famously called the house “a waste of money” in a “60 Minutes” profile in 1997, and the New York-based funnyman unloaded the house in July 1998 almost immediately after he ended production of his wildly popular sitcom.

“It’s a giant hotel room. I’m on the road. I’ve been on the road here for 16 years,” Seinfeld said of the house in the “60 Minutes” profile. “60 Minutes” correspondent Steve Kroft described the house as giving away “nothing,” and noting that it was furnished by a decorator. “It speaks to the owner’s lack of interest or lack of time,” Kroft said during the profile. “The couches look like they’ve never been dented. It’s more antiseptic than homey.”

Built in 1967, the gated 5,913-square-foot house has five baths, walls of glass, a screening room, a gym, a state-of-the-art kitchen, spaces for entertaining and a pool, according to public records and listing information. The house sits on a 0.41-acre parcel, according to public records.

We referenced this house once before, on October 30, 2007, when we wrote about actress Lori Loughlin having sold her Cape Cod-style house just down the street.

Greetings “me”–

Thanks for reading Big Time Listings! We appreciate all your comments. In the case of the former Seinfeld house, we hadn’t seen it written about anywhere else by any other celebrity real estate blogger or columnist–let us know if you have seen it written about by someone else. In the case of the former Cher house, I’m sure it *had* been on the market for a long time–just, we hadn’t written about it yet. Typically, when an item appears in multiple newspapers (esp. the Wall Street Journal’s “Private Properties” column, but also the Miami Herald and the Los Angeles Times’ “Hot Property” column), that often means that an agent has begun an aggressive PR campaign. In the case of the Cher house, clearly, the agent was “re-starting” a PR campaign. Since we hadn’t written about the former Cher/La Gorce mansion yet, and the agent’s recent PR campaign got coverage of it in the Miami Herald and the LA Times, that gave us a time peg to do so.

Once again, thanks for reading for Big Time Listings!

No, hadn’t seen the Seinfeld property written about anywhere else - just knew it had been on the market for quite a few months. As for the Cher property it has just had a $2M price chop & I think a change of realtor so perhaps that would be the reason for the “PR Campaign” - it’s lay on the market f-o-r-e-v-e-r!

Is this the house Seinfeld sold to one of the producer/writers on his show, Alec Berg?

Greetings “McBitchy”–

Thanks for reading Big Time Listings! We appreciate your question. Yes indeed, this is the house that Seinfeld sold to Alec Berg. We probably should have mentioned that in our item–it’s relevant given that viewers in syndication see Berg’s name during the credits of Seinfeld episodes. Thanks for pointing that out!
