Joy Behar of ABC's "The View" pays $2.555M for a two-bedroom co-op apartment in the Astor Court building on Manhattan's Upper West Side
Joy Behar, one of the co-hosts of ABC's daytime talk show "The View," has paid $2,555,000 for a two-bedroom co-op apartment in the Astor Court building on Manhattan's Upper West Side. On April 3, the New York Post's fine celebrity real estate columnist Braden Keil was the first to report on Behar's purchase, writing that she was paying "approximately $3.5 million" for a unit in the Astor Court building, which is at 205 W. 89th Street in Manhattan. Then, late yesterday, the New York Observer's Max Abelson broke the news in the paper's 'Manhattan Transfers' column that records show that Behar, 64, actually had paid $2,555,000 for the unit. The purchase document was prepared on May 6, but it wasn't recorded with the city until Friday, May 16. Features in Behar's new six-room unit, which had been on the market for $2,550,000 and which hasn't been renovated in 45 years, include two baths, high ceilings, a grand center hall, a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, and a separate bedroom wing, according to listing information. Keil also had reported on April 3 that Behar was planning to sell her longtime (since at least 2001), sixth-floor apartment, which also is in Astor Court, but no such sale has occurred as of yet. Behar told the Observer that she didn't leak the news of her apartment purchase to the Post, noting that if she had, she at least would have gotten the purchase price right. "I don't do that!" she told Abelson. "I'm not interested in conspicuous consumption. It's like telling my weight. I don't like to give out numbers." Behar also told the Observer that she plans to renovate her new unit, and that her existing sixth-floor unit in the building contains far less space for entertaining. Behar also co-owns with her daughter a place on 1.2 acres at 51 Northwest Path in Sagoponack, N.Y., according to public records. They purchased that place in 1999 for $412,000, according to public records. Check out an online listing sheet for Behar's new unit -- complete with photos -- here.
