Brad Pitt reportedly offered $8M for the 5,883-square-foot former Will and Ariel Durant estate in Los Angeles' Los Feliz neighborhood; actor was rebuffed and now reportedly is upgrading his existing Los Feliz compound to make it more family-friendly
Both the current issue of the National Enquirer (on newsstands now!) and the website Janet Charlton’s Hollywood are reporting that Brad Pitt recently offered $8,000,000 on the spot for a gated Spanish Colonial Revival-style house that long has been an object of his desire — the 5,883-square-foot house in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood that historians Will and Ariel Durant owned for many years until their deaths in 1981 — but was rejected by the house’s current owner. 
An inveterate fan of great architecture, Pitt long has had his eye on the house, which sits on a nearly 0.7-acre tract at 5608 Briarcliff Road in Los Feliz and therefore is just the equivalent of three to four city blocks east of Brad’s current compound at 5769 Briarcliff Road/5742 Valley Oak Drive/5750 Valley Oak Drive in the Oaks area of Los Feliz. (The property also includes an adjacent, 0.57-acre tract at 5618 Briarcliff that has been used for a tennis court.) The Enquirer link isn’t available online, but Charlton reported on Wednesday that Pitt has wanted the house because of its family-friendliness, and noted that the actor and his then-wife, Jennifer Aniston, checked it out some years ago. ‘Jen wasn’t thrilled with it, so they passed,’ Charlton wrote. But Brad ‘never forgot about the amazing house,’ Charlton wrote, and even though it wasn’t on the market, he nonetheless recently put in an offer of $8,000,000 for it. ‘The owner was flattered, but he wouldn’t budge. Brad was crushed, but he turned his attention to his own compound down the hill. He’s refurbishing the place to make it child-friendly,’ Charlton wrote. The current owner of the five-bedroom Durant estate, which in the past has been called Villa Durant, is a producer who paid $3,400,000 for it in July 1999, according to public records, and not the ‘close to its asking price of $4.5 million’ amount that the Los Angeles Times’ Ruth Ryon erroneously reported back in August 1999. For almost 40 years, the Durants reportedly lived in the house, which has five baths, hand-carved woodwork, stained glass windows, a third-floor rotunda, a butler’s pantry, a pool, gardens, rolling lawns, city-to-ocean views, three fireplaces, an observation tower, a full basement, a circular motor court and a custom-made fountain, according to past listing information and news accounts. The most recent reports in the Enquirer and Janet Charlton’s Hollywood state that Villa Durant was built in 1923, but other sources, including previous Los Angeles Times articles and public records, date the former Durant house to 1925. Brad and his partner Angelina Jolie own a slew of other properties. In addition to the compound that they currently own at 5769 Briarcliff Road in Los Feliz, Pitt and Jolie own a 4,088-square-foot oceanfront house at 32316 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, which his Mondo Bongo Trust purchased in 2005 for $8,410,000; a six-bedroom, 7,435-square-foot 1830s masonry mansion at 521 Governor Nicholls Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter that his Mondo Bongo Trust purchased in January 2007 for $3,500,000; and an 11.5-acre beachfront estate at 11000 Calle Real in Goleta, Calif. that his Briarcliff Trust purchased in 2000 for an undisclosed price. The Enquirer also reported that the couple owns properties in France and Cambodia as well.

With foreign investors from the Middle east,China and other non-speaking “English” countries. They fly over buy up real estate,,tear down then flip it for a profit.,,Hollywood isnt what it used to be when I first stepped into this former glitz city.
