Linda Lavin, the noted stage actress who played "Alice" on the 1970s and 1980s CBS sitcom of the same name, has paid the $949,000 asking price for a one-bedroom pied-a-terre on Manhattan's Central Park South. We're returning from a prolonged absence (we stayed in the Parker Meridien hotel in Manhattan last night and, yes, we have to confess, we spent about a half-hour in the ridiculous scrum outside the Virgin Mobile store in Times Square awaiting the midnight arrival of the Jonas Brothers, even though we're not even fans). And, at the same time are trying to catch up on items that we haven't written about up to now. With that in mind, we turn to Lavin, who at one time, hard as it may seem to believe, was the highest-paid actress on TV. The New York Times' Josh Barbanel first wrote on August 3 about Lavin's recent purchase of the co-op unit in the building at 200 Central Park South. Indeed, public records show that Lavin, whose full-time residence is in Wilmington, N.C., recorded a document with the city on July 8 regarding the purchase of the eighth-floor unit. It looks like the deal closed late in June, and it appears that Lavin previously had been renting a unit in the South Park Tower building at 124 W. 60th Street in Manhattan. Listing information says that Lavin's new 1,050-square-foot unit has 1.5 baths, a renovated kitchen, marble countertops, parquet floors, six closets (three of which are walk-ins), and walls of windows. In addition, listing information from listing agent Carol Raskin notes that the purchase of the unit did not actually require co-op board approval. This isn't the first property that Lavin has owned in New York City. Although Barbanel's article didn't mention this, back in 2005, Lavin sold her longtime, four-bedroom, 15th-floor co-op unit at 322 Central Park West for $4,400,000, according to public records. However, a New York Times article at that time did indeed report on it. As for Lavin's life in Wilmington, the actress owns scads of properties that she has rehabbed, including a house at 411 S. Front Street in Wilmington that was built in 1990. Check out an online listing sheet for the unit that Lavin just purchased.
